Water mills have been a feature of our landscape for centuries and are part of our national psyche – just think John Constable’s atmospheric mill paintings. In Gloucestershire, water mills were once commonplace thanks to our large number of rivers and they frequently occupied picturesque locations or valuable real estate. However almost all have now lost their waterwheels and machinery and have been repurposed into other uses. As well as their primary process, that of grinding corn into flour, many were later adapted to undertake several other roles notably that of cotton manufacture.  Although Gloucestershire had both wind and water mills, this presentation will focus on watermills and our rivers, so let’s begin the daily grind…
